Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has been making headlines recently, with reports claiming Rahul Gandhi is sidelining him amid disgruntlement in the Kerala cadre. Amid the rumours, his photo with BJP’s Union Minister Piyush Goyal added fuel to the fire. The four-time MP from Thiruvananthapuram has now come forward to put a full stop to the curiosity about his future in the Congress party.
Shashi Tharoor, in a candid conversation with The Indian Express, dismissed the idea of joining the Bharatiya Janata Party citing ideological differences.
“…No, every party has their own belief and history. It is not right to join other party if you can’t embrace their belief. I don’t think that is right. But there is always an option to be independent. In today’s time party is a vehicle one needs to carry organisational strength to carry those values forward,” the Thiruvananthapuram MP said.
“At national level, the BJP has shown ability to put forward this which we haven’t able to replicate in many states. In Kerala, CPIM has shown the ability in last two elections and I don’t see anything wrong in pointing that out. We (Congress) lack organisation in every booth, lack of workers. We are not a cadre-based party. We have many leaders but we lack of workers. But I am against the plan of changing India into ‘Hindu Rashtra’. This is against our Constitution,” Tharoor further said.
The Congress MP was also questioned on his personal life and his plans to remarry. “Not at all. I have had a lot of experience in life. In the last 10 years, I have been single.”
Tharoor revealed that while his mother encourages him to remarry, he is content with his current phase. “God hasn’t made me feel the need for it now,” he remarked.
Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar, 51, was found dead in a suite of a luxury hotel in Delhi on the night of January 17, 2014, while Shashi Tharoor was attending a Congress meet in Delhi along with then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Gandhis and the entire Congress leadership.
The Tharoors had moved into the hotel because the MP’s home was being renovated.
The Thiruvananthapuram MP was charged with abetment to suicide and cruelty by the Delhi Police. A Delhi court, however, in 2021, refused to accept a Delhi Police chargesheet that said Tharoor should be investigated, and cleared the former Union Minister of all charges.
