BJP MP Nishikant Dubey criticized the Supreme Court, alleging former Chief Justice Baharul Islam had Congress ties and dropped corruption cases against Indira Gandhi.
Dubey is not the first leader who targeted Congress over Justice Islam. Last year, BJP MP Brij Lal alleged interference of Congress in judicial appointments after Justice Islam was made a Supreme Court judge.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who is under fire after he claimed that the Supreme Court is responsible for inciting religious wars in the country, on Tuesday shared two posts on microblogging site X related to two former chief justices.
In one of the two posts, Dubey shed light on Justice Baharul Islam’s ties with Congress and said he was made a Rajya Sabha in the name of “appeasement” in 1962. The BJP leader said he was appointed a high court judge in 1972 without making him resign from the Upper House and subsequently acting Chief Justice of Assam High Court in 1979.
Dubey alleged that Justice Islam, who retired in 1980, was directly made a Supreme Court judge and later he dropped all corruption cases against former prime minister Indira Gandhi.
The BJP leader further claimed that Congress made him retire from the Supreme Court in 1983 only to send him to the Rajya Sabha for the third time.

Who Was Justice Baharul Islam?
Born On March 1, 1918, Islam attended Gurdon High School in Assam’s Kamrup and went to Cotton College in Guwahati and Aligarh Muslim University. He enrolled as an Advocate of the Assam High Court in 1951 and as an Advocate of the supreme Court in 1958. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1962 and for a second term in 1968. Islam was appointed as chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in 1979 and retired in March 1980. However, he returned as judge of Supreme Court in December 1980.
