Delhi BJP MLA Neelam Pahalwan on Thursday proposed to rename Najafgarh to Nahargarh, citing historical references, and urged the Assembly to act on the idea.

She demanded that the “true identity” of the place be restored.

Pahalwan had won the Delhi Assembly Elections by beating AAP’s Tarun Kumar by a margin of over 29,000 votes.

While speaking in the Assembly on Thursday, the BJP MLA called upon Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Speaker Vijender Gupta to act on the proposal.

“In the 1857 revolt, Raja Nahar Singh fought and included the Najafgarh region in Delhi’s territory. Despite several efforts, including through the them MP Parvesh Verma, we tried to change the name of Najafgarh to ‘Nahargarh’. I hope you all will support us in this,” she said.

Other Name Change Proposals

As Pahalwan proposed the change of name, BJP MLA from RK Puram Anil Sharma also pitched the idea of changing the name of a locality in his constituency. He said that Mohammadpur, which is a sublocality in RK Puram, be renamed as Madhavpuram, adding that he would table the proposal in the Assembly.

Mohan Singh Bisht, who won from Mustafabad, had earlier announced to rename the constituency to either Shiv Puri or Shiv Vihar.

“I will change the name of Mustafabad to Shiv Puri or Shiv Vihar. I have said this before, and I don’t understand why political parties insist on keeping the name ‘Mustafabad.’ This area has a Hindu-majority population, and people are uncomfortable with the name ‘Mustafa.’ It should be changed, and I will make sure it happens,” Bisht said.
