India’s Richest MLA Is From The BJP, So Is The Poorest; Andhra Pradesh Tops The List: Report

Andhra Pradesh dominates the list of wealthiest MLAs, boasting four representatives in the top 10 and seven in the top 20. Karnataka is also well-represented, with a notable number of its MLAs appearing on the list

A new report by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) has revealed a stark financial disparity among India’s MLAs, with southern states dominating the list of the wealthiest and leaders from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh leading the pack.

The report, which analysed the self-declared assets of 4,092 MLAs from 28 state assemblies and three union territories, highlights a staggering difference of over Rs 3,382 crore between the richest and poorest.

Topping the list is BJP MLA from Maharashtra Parag Shah with assets declared at Rs 3,383 crore. In stark contrast, the MLA with the lowest declared assets is also from the BJP, Nirmal Kumar Dhara from West Bengal, with just Rs 1,700 to his name.

The top 10 richest MLAs are:

  1. Parag Shah (BJP, Maharashtra) – Rs 3,383 crore
  2. D.K. Shivakumar (Congress, Karnataka) – Rs 1,413 crore
  3. K.H. Puttaswamy Gowda (Independent, Karnataka) – Rs 1,267 crore
  4. Priyakrishna (Congress, Karnataka) – Rs 1,156 crore
  5. N. Chandrababu Naidu (TDP, Andhra Pradesh) – Rs 931 crore
  6. Ponguru Narayana (TDP, Andhra Pradesh) – Rs 824 crore
  7. Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy (YSRCP, Andhra Pradesh) – Rs 757 crore
  8. V. Prashanthi Reddy (TDP, Andhra Pradesh) – Rs 716 crore
  9. Jayantibhai Somabhai Patel (BJP, Gujarat) – Rs 661 crore
  10. Suresha B.S. (Congress, Karnataka) – Rs 648 crore

Andhra Pradesh leads the pack with four MLAs featuring in the top 10 wealthiest, and seven in the top 20. Karnataka follows closely with a strong presence on the list.

The BJP, with the highest number of MLAs analysed, also boasts the highest combined assets at Rs 26,270 crore, averaging Rs 15.89 crore per MLA. Congress follows with a total of Rs 17,357 crore, averaging Rs 26.86 crore per MLA. The TDP, despite having only 134 MLAs, comes in third with total assets of Rs 9,108 crore, averaging Rs 67.97 crore per MLA.
