Telangana’s opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) slammed Chief Minister Revanth Reddy over spending Rs 200 crore on a beauty pageant when there’s a deficit of Rs 71,000 crore.

The opposition parties criticised the government over Rs 71,000 crore revenue shortfall, insufficient funds to pay salaries or Dearness Allowances, and no money for capital expenditure in the state’s budget.

On Tuesday afternoon, opposition lawmakers staged a protest during the reading of the annual budget in the Assembly. They held dried crops to highlight their allegations of a “Congress-created drought” and criticised the funds allocated for the Miss World event. Instead, they called for Rs 25,000 per acre to support farmers affected by the crisis.

Notably, Telangana will host the 72nd edition of the Miss World pageant from May 7 to May 31.

Earlier this week, BRS leader KT Rama Rao also weighed in on the plans to host the 72nd Miss World pageant, blasting the “perverse logic” of the ruling Congress in spending “crores of public money” on the event while taking legal action against him over alleged irregularities in the Rs 46 crore Formula-E race scam.

“Apparently, spending ₹46 crore for the Formula-E race in Hyderabad was wrong & will attract cases being filed. But spending ₹200 crore of public money to conduct Miss World, a beauty contest, is right!! What is this perverse logic? Can you please explain @RahulGandhi Ji?” wrote KTR in a post on X on March 11.

In another post on Monday, March 17, Rama Rao continued to criticise the Congress government and posted on X, “The Congress government wants us to believe all is well in Telangana… If that is true, why did the Chief Minister suddenly confess yesterday that there is negative growth… and a deficit of Rs 71,000 crore? Is Telangana rising or falling?”

The party, however, responded in a softer tone, with spokesperson Krishank explaining that their criticism was directed at the Congress’ “double standards and hypocrisy” over the Formula-E corruption case involving KTR.

The BRS has strongly criticised the Congress for its misguided financial priorities and its management of the state’s economy, particularly the lack of development under Reddy’s leadership.

The Chief Minister, whose ongoing feud with KTR reached new heights last week following the latter’s “this mad dog…” remark, retaliated by accusing his predecessor, K Chandrasekhar Rao, of financially crippling Telangana.

Reddy further accused the BRS of leaving behind a massive public debt, with monthly interest payments of Rs 1.53 lakh crore, for the incoming Congress government to handle.

“If such a large amount had been saved, this government could have constructed homes for everyone… farm loans could have been waived for another 70 lakh people,” he was quoted by news agency ANI.
